About Buck Mountain Maple Farm
All I ever wanted to do when I was young was to plow snow, grow Christmas trees, Pumpkins, Produce Maple Syrup, and Honey. I enjoy making a healthy product that people enjoy- it is a labor of love for sure.
It started with a couple of used cook stoves, a turkey fryer, garbage can, and some borrowed sap buckets, that evolved into a griddle, then a 18"x48" oil fired rich, that my Uncle Mark Adams made, that was made better than any factory arch. Currently I am boiling on a Leader Oil Fired arch, with a Leader Steam- Away, and a Homemade RO, thanks to my brainiac old friend, Matt Estey. My partner in crime, who is the skilled person in this partnership is Bryan Peck, who is a typical Vermonter, someone who has the knack to figure anything out. I could not do any of this, without the love and support of my beautiful wife, who is always feeding us, cleaning stuff, pulling taps, and helping out.
The older I get, the more I want to have my own little farm, and do a little of everything. I take great pride in Sugaring, Gardening, and just being outside. I always say, anybody can make syrup, it's about how you want to do it- on a homemade rig, or a 6x16 arch with all the bells and whistles, they will all get you to the final prize, pure maple syrup.
Currently we have 600 taps, all on gravity tubing, yet looking to expand and get vacuum on the majority of them. Some of the taps are in New Haven, some are located on Big Hollow Road in Starksboro. For the first time this year, we will be buying some sap.
The name Buck Mountain Maple Farm comes from my in laws family land, located in Waltham. They hold this land very true to their heart. Seeing it for the first time, I could see why. I enjoy taking walks over there, looking at the beautiful views, hunting and just listening to the woods wake up.
In 2015 I started building my dream sugarhouse.. again. Bryan was there with the skill to build this with me. We started framing New Years Eve and was building on a 3x10 reverse fired arch built by Matt Esty. Every year I have added taps and currently have 2,100 taps that all come from Buck Mountain to the sugarhouse with a CDL 900, GPH RO to squeeze it. In August of 2011, a 8,900 gallon silo was added to my sugarhouse , and with a built in tank washer it makes my life a little easier. Everything is on vacuum of an Airtech pump, with a CDL electric releaser also with a built in washer for clean up.
